Improving Moods with Yoga

New studies at the Boston University School of Medicine may help to explain Yoga’s positive effects on moods and mood disorders. According to their research, Yoga increases the level of GABA, a neurotransmitter that affects the brain in much the same way that an antidepressant does. If these results prove to be true, Yoga could become a non-drug alternative, or adjunct therapy, for the treatment of conditions like depression and anxiety disorders. It could also improve the quality of life for those suffering from the chronic stress and tension of daily life.

According to Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga, maintaining a good mood is as simple as being able to control one’s reactions to positive and negative emotions. To operate effectively, the brain needs approximately 25% more oxygen than the other organs in the body. Yoga not only produces natural chemicals that calm the mind, but it also increases the supply of freshly oxygenated blood to the brain.

Negative emotions create a self-fulfilling cycle. When a person is angry, or anxious, breathing becomes shallow and irregular. As a result, the body takes in less oxygen, and its organs function less efficiently – increasing the likelihood of fatigue, depression, and illness. In turn, physical activity and mental alertness decrease; and the need for mood-altering substances to combat mood swings escalates.

Meditation and breathing help to regulate the adrenal system and calm the mind, and Yoga poses (asanas) themselves can be considered a form of moving meditation. The following Yoga asanas are often practiced for their restorative and stabilizing effect on the emotions:

• Supported Legs Up the Wall Pose is great for restoring energy, reducing blood pressure, and boosting the immune system.

• Supported Bridge Pose helps to balance hormones, manage headaches, and relieve hot flashes.

• Supported Lying Down Bound Angle Pose helps to relieve mood swings and depression.

• Child’s Pose relieves tension in the back and neck and restores energy and balance.

• Corpse Pose relaxes the entire body and reduces fatigue and mild depression.

• Bridge Pose helps to alleviate symptoms of menopause and rejuvenates tired legs.

• Downward Facing Dog helps to balance mood swings and can be helpful for adolescents.

Improving moods with Yoga is a reality.  Mood swings, especially, fluctuate throughout the different stages and circumstances of life. From budding puberty to post-menopause, a good Yoga instructor can help to develop a routine that deals with relevant issues and provides a basis for general health and well-being.

Yoga teacher training programs should help instructors be prepared for a variety of health problems.  The illusion that everyone who takes classes will be in perfect health is a myth.  According to some statistics, there hundreds of millions of people, worldwide, who suffer from diabetes, and other related health problems.

With less physical activity, these figures are expected to climb in the next 10 to 20 years. However, the Hatha yoga techniques provide a holistic perspective for type 2 diabetes. In addition to organ dysfunction, psychological, emotional, and mental stress; inactivity promotes the occurrence of the disease.

Therefore, relaxation exercises (asanas, guided relaxation, and pranayama), Hatha Yoga Kriya (cleansing techniques), and meditation, do not only influence insulin producing cells positively, but keep the disease causing factors under control, too.

Yoga exercises stimulate the attitude towards health and life itself – enormously. The development of physical and mental relaxation creates stability, strength, flexibility, and discipline. These factors lead to the higher goals of Hatha yoga, namely the emotional, mental, and spiritual health of a human body.

The Yogic exercise program creates balance between the hormonal glands. As a result of this balance, overall health is improved. Research has shown that Hatha Yoga decreases the blood sugar level and that it subsequently remains constant. The healing process as, for example, with a diabetic foot problem, is immensely improved, as well. Yoga sessions are also proven to lower the stress hormone levels because insulin production is supported.

Due to the broad spectrum of Hatha yoga diabetes exercise, the person is brought into harmony with his or her entire being. The Yoga training system has a positive effect on all five Koshas. Koshas are the sheaths that surround the core of every human body and its health; thus, they define the well-being.

The five Koshas are as following:

Anna Maya Kosha – “sheath of matter” – physical body

Pranayama Kosha – “sheath of body of prana (energy)”

Manomaya Kosha -“sheath of the mind”

Vigyanamaya Kosha – “sheath of ego and knowledge”

Anandamaya Kosha – “sheath of bliss and enjoyment”

Regular Hatha Yoga exercise helps to avoid complications in diabetes. With optimal insulin production, the pancreas forces the cells to capture and process glucose properly. Yoga postures lower blood fats (triglycerides and cholesterol) and prevent hardening of the arteries; thus, the risk of a heart disease decreases.

In addition, a possible nephropathy is prevented, as the kidneys can filter out toxins better. Through targeted Hatha Yoga exercise, the body-perception is trained. This allows early detection of eventual nerve damage (neuropathy) and its immediate treatment.

Regular practice of Hatha Yoga breathing exercises (pranayama) can also improve the flexibility and vitality. The pancreas is activated by the Yoga session and the body areas that have been damaged by diabetes may recover. However, it is essential to keep a controlled diet in mind and to follow the doctor’s instructions.

To become healthier again, the practice of a Hatha Yoga program is required between 3 to 5 times per week. The learned Yogic exercises need only take about half an hour for home sessions and is not only nurturing, but also fun.
