yoga teacher trainingBy Faye Martins

The film industry has always documented American society, and movie references can be counted on to legitimize cultural trends. Starting in the 1960s and moving forward to today, there have been films about Yoga and films that feature Yoga as a major plot point, showing that it has become an important part of life for many people. To catch up on how Hollywood thinks of Yoga, Below are some films to watch.

Eat, Pray, Love: this 2010 film starring Julia Roberts was based on a book by the same name. The main character visits an ashram and does yoga as part of her process of self-revelation.

Yoga, Inc.: A sometimes critical look at the materialism that has become a part of the western yoga movement, this 2007 movie was made by Australian director John Philip. He primarily targets the Bikram yoga franchise, run with huge profits by Bikram Choudhury. The film does offer interviews with other teachers and concludes in a well-rounded approach that Yoga is a changing movement and while commercialism is present, it does not spoil the core values of the practice.

Yoga has also appeared in some unusual places in the film industry. The 1967 film “Easy Come Easy Go,” featured Elvis Presley in a song and dance sequence performing “Yoga Is As Yoga Does,” and he performs a hand bind during the song. There are comic scenes featuring Yoga in the recent popular movies “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and “Meet the Fockers.” Johnny Knoxville’s shock comedy series “Jackass,” includes one segment of him attending a Yoga class with some personal issues.

Yoga has even played a role in horror and martial arts films. The 1979 film “Kung Fu vs. Yoga,” features a brave hero who must steal a ruby from a Yoga master to win his bride. During the fight scene, Yoga provides extra flexibility to the dastardly Yoga master. “Yoga Hakwon,” or “Yoga School,” a 2009 film directed by Korean director Yoon Jae Yeon features a home shopping network star who attends an intensive Yoga course promising eternal beauty to her and the other students; of course, the price to be paid is far too high. The stars actually practice Yoga and promotional photos for the film show them in a variety of asanas. There are also uncanny scenes of Yoga flow amid the horror in this movie.

Enjoy these films and the many others available, including documentaries available from independent distributors. We all look forward to Yoga in the movies performing a starring role as it gains acceptance across the country.

Tips on Becoming a Yoga Master

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

yoga teacher trainingBy Kimaya Singh

Before discussing tips on how to become a Yoga master, we must ascertain what we mean by such an honorary title. When is one a Yoga master? Should they teach one thousand hours or twenty thousand hours before acquiring such a title? Some alpha numeric designations don’t really do justice to the Gurus who have taught over ten thousand hours.’

Hatha Yoga is just one of the nine main Yoga styles.  Currently, there are a wide-variety of Hatha Yoga teacher training programs available to aspiring Yoga teachers throughout the world. Many of these programs offer a 500 hour professional level “master” Yoga teacher certification. Most 500 hour graduates have only 100 hours of teaching under their belts.

At this level, you are supposedly considered to be a professional “Yoga Master.” However, classically speaking, a Yoga master is an individual who was venerated by householders and sages alike, for being “self-realized” and permanently steeped in the awareness of the all-pervasive experience of God’s love within his or her own heart.

A true Guru, Swami, or Yoga master does not present him or herself as such, instead the yogi or yogini’s level of accomplishment would be evident through his or her behavior, understanding, speech and affect on other people. According to Indian tradition, a true Yoga master would also be a disciple of a long lineage of authentic Yoga masters, stretching far back in time, even as far back as Shiva. A true Yoga master would also usually have a group of dedicated initiates following his or her teachings.

If you aspire to become a true Yoga master, you must embrace and nurture the divine qualities within yourself. Qualities such as love, compassion, dignity, truthfulness and purity of action. You must also live your life in an honorable and dharmic way. In order to truly elevate and uplift the people around you, you must first be imbued with divine grace and the constant remembrance of the divine love that permeates all reality.

As a Yoga master, when you walk into a room, just your presence will uplift the people around you. In order to stay in such a great state, you must stay strongly connected to the divine source energy within you. In order to accomplish this goal, it is of paramount importance to maintain a daily sadhana practice of meditation, contemplation, pranayams, kirtan, and Yoga asanas. The more connected and aligned you are with your own divine nature, the more you will be able to inspire and uplift the people around you.

Becoming a Yoga master is not just about precision in difficult Yoga asanas. To bear the honorary title of Yoga master, you must first be in a constant state of remembrance of God. Ultimately, your journey to becoming a Yoga master is a journey of learning to love unconditionally. Not just others, but yourself as well.

As you become permanently steeped in divine love and serenity, your presence will automatically elevate and uplift, not only your Yoga students, but all those with whom you come into contact only a daily basis. Only then will you be worthy of the title, “Yoga Master.”

People are very hassled, worried and quite tensed up in this day and age. The worldwide recession and the rigors of modern living leave little space for people who seemingly have no time to spend for themselves and their families. This is one reason why so many people are looking out for avenues to start and maintain fitness regimes which they can identify with.

In this age of extreme utilitarianism, it is quite true that people want the best that they can get and what better way to do this than to take up an exercise regime that relaxes the mind and also trains the body. Yoga, as most people know is an ancient Indian fitness form which has a religious Hindu connection as it was practiced by the sages and the saints in the Himalayas.
