Yoga for Weight Loss: Vigorous Sun Salutations

Practicing Yoga for weight loss is a great way to tone, shape and sculpt your body. Not only does Yoga help to increase your range of movement and flexibility, it also helps to strengthen your entire body. There are many different Yoga postures or asanas that one can practice. A Yoga practice can be tailored to energizing you or relaxing and restoring your vital life energy. If you are focusing on weight loss, practicing Yoga postures and sequences that raise your heart rate to an aerobic level will help you to burn more calories and lose weight. There are also strengthening techniques that can be incorporated into a traditional Yoga flow to increase the sculpting and toning benefits of the practice.

One of the basic vinyasa or flow series in Yoga routines is the Sun Salutation. This series of foundational poses warms up all of the core muscle groups in the body. The Sun Salutation also increases optimal blood flow to all areas of your body, including areas that may be tight or contracted from stress and tension. The ensuing release of tension will increase your energy level dramatically. If you move at a pace that is quick enough to raise your heart rate to a moderate aerobic level, you will burn calories and improve the functioning of your cardiovascular system.

Many of the poses that are part of the Sun Salutation flow series are also very strengthening.  A great way to increase the aerobic and strengthening effectiveness of the Sun Salutation is to incorporate strengthening moves as you link the poses together with a vinyasa flow. One way to do this is to practice leg raises while you are in Downward Facing Dog before you move into the next standing posture.

Adding Leg Raises into the Sun Salutation

After warming up with several basic Sun Salutations, you will be ready to include leg raises into your Yoga flow. When you are in Downward Facing Dog, pause and shift your left foot in a few inches towards the center of your mat. With your body weight evenly distributed between your hands, raise your right leg behind you with your next inhale. Keep your toes pointing towards the floor.

Slowly bring your right knee towards your right arm. Hold for several seconds and then raise your right leg behind you again. Repeat two more times and then transition into your next standing posture by bringing your right leg forward on your Yoga mat. When you are ready to move into the same asana on the left hand side, pause in Downward Facing Dog and practice three leg raises with your left leg. If you incorporate three leg raises on each side before each standing asana, you will tone, sculpt and shape your body very effectively.

A healthy diet is integral to a healthy body. Eating more fruits and vegetables and less processed foods are key elements to healthier living. Reducing body fat through eating less and exercising is also part of living a better lifestyle. Being overweight is associated with a number of health issues including heart disease, diabetes and even depression. Being overweight is a condition that many people grapple with. The negative effects of weighing too much can include serious joint problems, diabetes and heart issues – just to name a few. Researchers and doctors tell us that reducing calories and engaging in regular exercise can help people lose weight. Adding Yoga to your life can have additional positive effects. One of the strongest benefits to regularly practicing Yoga is developing the mind-body connection. This valuable connection can help to change the way people look at food. It can also help to enhance a more positive body image instead of a negative body image – something that is important for everyone, not just people who are overweight.

Walking, running and other aerobic activities are excellent cardiovascular workouts that can help burn calories. Adding Yoga to the mix can help enhance the weight loss – especially if it’s Power Yoga. But even for novices that are just trying Yoga for the first time can benefit from a gentler form of Yoga. Flowing through the Yoga poses while synchronizing your breathing can help to build the all-important mind body connection that Yoga is known for.

Is Yoga Weight Loss Really Possible?

No other holistic path brings body and soul into harmony like the Indian teaching of Yoga does. Actresses, models, directors, and housewives, practice the ancient art of Yoga to process stress, or to prevent it altogether in the first place. Nevertheless, is there anything else that Yoga can offer besides tranquilization? Indeed, with only a few Yoga exercises one can obtain a perfect body shape; thus, reach his or her ideal weight.

Can Yoga help one to lose weight permanently? This is still is a controversial topic that brings about many different opinions. Fact is that Yoga can be both a physical and mental activity at the same time, which solely depends on the exact training method or style. Regardless of which kind of Yoga is ultimately practiced, the Indian doctrine is in no way comparable with regular exercise or sports.

Yoga is a holistic practice involving more than just the physical body and its methods are gradual. There is no encouragement to injure oneself for short term gain. As a comparison, a 135-pound person would burn about 150 to 200 calories for an hour of Yoga exercise.

In an hour of workout, swimming or jogging, the calories burned would be approximately 300 to 500 calories, which is at least double the amount of Yoga. However, with a very physical Yoga style and application, it is possible to reduce weight faster. This is due to unrealistic demand of lose weight now at all costs. This is why hot Yoga has grown, due to demand of reducing body weight.

Gentle Yoga creates strength and understanding for one’s own body. This harmony supports the person to understand that his or her body is not an enemy that has to be fought with, but, rather, something he or she must cherish.

It is essential to absorb the wisdom of Yoga, as learning how to deal with daily stress, combined with a correct diet, sets the first foundation toward successful weight loss without much trouble. However, it is vital to keep in mind that only a moderate long term goal, as well as a realistic time frame, will create the desired results.

Of course, one can relate the positive side effects on the body’s fitness and the reached dream-weight, to the Yoga exercise. As with any other physical activity, the number of consumed calories rise with the amount of exertion.

Implementing additional yoga exercises into the daily routine, such as Ashtanga, Power Yoga and Hot Yoga, can aid in burning even more calories than usual. Yet, moderation is still a key element at the heart of Yoga.

It must be realized that Yoga alone is certainly no calorie killer. The Yogic path can promote and support a healthy lifestyle a controlled level of physical activity. Although Yoga on its own does not make people slim, it paves the way toward a relaxed, balanced, and healthy lifestyle, which, in the end, includes an ideal body weight for that person.

Poses and Exercises in Yoga for Weight Loss

Yoga has originated from India many years ago. The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from Sanskrit which means union. It is the union of the mind and body to achieve a well balanced life. Practicing yoga not only helps in toning your body, improving the physical and mental well being, but also helps in fat loss. Yoga for weight loss is very commonly used by most of the people as the awareness is spreading. Many celebrities are using yoga for weight loss nowadays.

Yoga is an effective way to maintain healthy body without any negative side effects. It helps in reducing the fat and increasing the metabolism of the body. There are various school and styles of yoga which depict different ways of practicing yoga. Some of the styles are: Bikram, Kundalini, Astanga and Iyengar. They all aim towards the same goal but in slightly different ways. There are many poses or asanas in yoga for weight loss. Deep breathing in yoga increases the intake of oxygen in the body. Some of the poses and exercises in yoga for weight loss are as below:

1. Pranayam: Pranayam is a set of breathing exercises that have an effective impact on weight loss. Deep breathing done in the proper way helps in reducing the abdominal fat. There are different breathing techniques which can be practiced like kapalbhati, bhastrika, anulom vilom, bharamari and ujjayi pranayam. Kapalbhati is said to be very effective since it involves forceful exhalation of air. Care should be taken that this should be done on an empty stomach only. This is not only good for obesity but also for indigestion and acidity. In Anulom Vilom, one has to close one nostril with the thumb and breathe deeply from the other. This has to be repeated alternating the nostrils. These deep breathing exercises are very helpful and should be done under guidance.

2. Sun Salutations: Sun Salutations or Surya Namaskar is a series of 12 poses which help in weight loss and tone up the whole body. These poses along with sequenced breathing provide a lot of benefits to the body and mind. One should start with 1 or 2 rounds and slowly increase to at least 10 to 12 rounds. People with high blood pressure and pregnant women are advised not to perform this.

3. Bhujanga Asana: This is also called the Cobra Pose. It works on the shoulders, back, arms and other internal organs.

4. Yoga Spinal Twists: This works on your abdominal region and your entire digestive system. Spinal Twists help in burning calories and toning the abs. This is a good yoga for weight loss. Likewise there are many other poses which help in weight loss. One has to learn under guidance and perform slowly.

Yoga for weight loss will be effective only if combined with a proper diet. Eliminate the junk food and carbonated drinks from your diet. Include lot of greens, pulses, sprout, salads and fruits in your food intake to provide the body with the necessary proteins and vitamins. Do not break your yoga routine; do it regularly with dedication. The results may not be very quick but be patient and keep practicing yoga for weight loss. It is important to do yoga under an expert’s guidance. Yoga for weight loss will also result in a toned body, flexible body, less stress and anxiety, increase in concentration, strengthening of physical and mental health.

Yoga Exercises for Weight Loss

I recently attended a class focused on yoga exercises for weight loss. This was a Bikram style class combining classic yoga asanas with a heated workout space. The floor area maintains a constant temperature of 104 degrees. This workout approach is a good methodology to follow for those seeking a fitness routine based around yoga. Whether following a Bikram specific routine or other yoga discipline the following conditions are ideal as part of any weight loss program:

Heated Floorspace

A heated workout area provides immediate benefits when exercising as your body can warm up quickly. This minimizes the chance of injury and allows you to put your body into deeper poses. Yoga exercises for weight loss involve a strenuous and active workout and a heated practice area provides increased gains in flexibility and muscle development.

Oxygenated Blood

Although not immediately noticeable to the practitioner, the increased heat profile of the practice space provides a constant flow of oxygenated blood throughout a person’s body. This is because it is easier to get into a deeper stretch when doing a pose. This has a positive effect on contracting the muscles more completely and the result is a more pronounced flow of blood throughout the body. That has the effect of carrying more oxygen and allows you to perform at a higher, more aerobic level. In layman’s terms you can push yourself harder and you will see a weight loss benefit.

Constant Routine

One of the key things to look for in utilizing yoga exercises for weight loss is how constant the workout routine is. The class I participated was led by an instructor that moved from pose to pose, relatively constantly. A yoga pose was shown, practiced by the class and then repeated – usually 3 times. Once completed the instructor moved the class to the next pose with very short breaks occurring only every 20 to 30 minutes. This had a fairly aerobic effect simply due to the pace being practiced.

Maximum Workout with Minimal Impact

Certainly a complete and very active workout occurs using this type of exercise routine. But perhaps the greatest benefit is the minimal impact to the body’s joints, ligaments and tendons. This workout, while very aerobic, did not add unneeded stress or pressure to these critical parts of the body.

I cross train regularly practicing different yoga postures with other physical fitness activities. The positive benefits described here occurred due to the fact that this was a strenuous and active workout approach. Yoga is a Safe Solution to Weight Control

One more study tells the world, that Yoga can help with weight control and weight loss. The latest study was held by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington.

The study involved 15,500 healthy, middle-aged, men and women. This is a group that typically has difficulty with weight loss, since the number of calories needed declines, and the energy levels needed to burn calories, is not what it used to be.

Unfortunately, this is a fact that I have become painfully aware of during the past few years, and cutting back on food was my unwanted last option. Although, I cross train almost daily, it took me one year to lose 16 pounds of extra weight.

Back to the study: Yoga practice was defined as practicing at least 30 minutes once a week for four or more years. Comparatively speaking, this is truly bare minimum, and many Yoga teachers used to say that this amount of Yoga will do nothing.

How times change; Yoga has been keeping people fit for approximately 5,000 years, and its many health benefits are still a mystery worthy of more studies.

Alan R. Kristal, Dr.P.H., the study’s lead author at Hutchinson Center’s Public Health Sciences Division said, “Men and women who were of normal weight at age 45, and who regularly practiced Yoga, gained about three fewer pounds during that 10-year period than those who didn’t practice Yoga.”

Until all the studies are in, it would be safe to say that adding Yoga practice to your weekly routine, and eating wisely, will contribute to weight control or weight loss.

When seeking a Yoga teacher, find one who is compassionate, yet will encourage you to practice more frequently. The results you will gain from regular practice, of three to four Yoga classes per week, will be extraordinary, especially, if you practice Yoga for years.

Yoga is very low impact – in comparison to many aerobic exercise routines, and can be practiced for longevity. Your knees, spine, hips, and shoulders, will thank you for the condition Yoga will keep them in. Many of today’s standard forms of exercise do not have the same bragging rights, as Yoga.

With respect to eating, take the time to identify hunger and cravings. You will notice that they are not the same thing. Being a chocolate lover, it is much better to eat a piece of chocolate, now and then, than to buy a dozen chocolate donuts. This is not to justify, or surrender, to chocolate, but to eat it in moderation, and not every day.

Based upon what I have said so far, it is all about identification, control, and moderation. We have to stop “mindless eating” habits.

Recently, researchers found that women who received a 1200 mg. calcium supplement, on a daily basis, reduced their number of premenstrual food cravings by 54%.

On another note: When you have anxiety, your body produces more of the hormone cortisol, which may increase the volume of carbohydrates you eat. Carbohydrates temporarily increase our levels of serotonin, making us feel relaxed for the short term.
